PBL Presentation

This is our presenation on our Problem Based Learning issue, where we used the six step process of PBL to determine the best course of action for a given ethical problem. I chose this sample because the professor was very impressed with our work, and will be using it to showcase to next years' students how to complete the project. I also felt that this presenation was a throrough representation of how to do the six step process.

In the Honors Healthcare Ethics Seminar this semester, we learned how to morally and professionally approach different types of ethical issues in the healthcare field. In class, we discussed many issues that had mixed feelings within the class, and evaluated our thoughts from various perspectives. Later in the class, we were introduced to the problem based learning six step process, which allows us to determine alternative methods of action using various perspectives, including the utilitarianism, deontology, and egoism. After gathering background info for a given ethical issue, you are able to categorize it as either an ethical dilemma, a moral distress issue, or a locus of authority problem. From there, you can view the issue from different perspectives to come up with different possible methods of action. Using these frameworks, you select a method of action and carry it out. After you have acted on your selected course of action, you review the process and evaluate what you would have done differently. This process can be used for many different problems throughout the health care field. Learning about this problem based learning process is something that I can certainly carry with me in my professional work as a speech language pathologist.
